Tyre performance: comparing grip, braking, comfort and wear
Grip, braking, noise, comfort and wear — what the ratings really mean.
- Temperature grade
- A best · B · C
- Traction grade
- AA best · A · B · C
- Treadwear
- 300 sporty · 500+ long-life
- EU wet grip
- A best → E
- Noise
- dB value, lower is quieter
The short answer
Tyre performance is a trade-off between grip, comfort, noise and tread life. For UAE drivers, the most useful ratings are the UTQG temperature grade (choose A), treadwear (higher lasts longer) and independent wet-braking results. Premium touring tyres give the best balance; UHP tyres maximise grip but wear faster in the heat.
The performance trade-off
No tyre is best at everything. A soft compound grips harder but wears faster; a stiff sidewall sharpens steering but rides firmer; an open tread pattern clears sand and water but is noisier. Decide what matters most for your driving, then pick the category.
| Category | Strength | Trade-off | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Touring | Comfort, quiet, long life | Less sharp steering | Michelin Primacy 4+ |
| UHP | Grip, steering, braking | Wears faster, costs more | Pirelli P Zero |
| Highway SUV | Load, stability, quiet | Limited off-road | Bridgestone Dueler H/P |
| All-terrain | Sand and gravel traction | Noise, fuel use | BFGoodrich KO2 |
| Economy | Low price, efficiency | Longer wet braking | Kumho Solus TA31 |
UTQG ratings
Most tyres sold in the UAE carry American UTQG grades on the sidewall: Treadwear (a relative number — 600 should last roughly twice as long as 300 under the same conditions), Traction (AA, A, B, C — wet braking) and Temperature (A, B, C — resistance to heat build-up). In Gulf heat, a temperature grade of A is the one we'd insist on.
EU tyre label
European-market tyres also carry an EU label with wet grip (A–E), rolling resistance (A–E) and external noise in decibels. The difference between an A and a C wet-grip tyre can be 10+ metres when braking from 80 km/h on a wet road.
How heat changes performance
Hot asphalt softens tread compounds, which improves dry grip slightly but accelerates wear and can make UHP tyres feel greasy after hard driving. Rain is rare in the UAE, but the first rain after months of dry weather lifts oil to the surface — that's when wet-grip ratings matter most.

Common questions
Common questions
What tyre lasts longest in the UAE?
Long-life touring and highway tyres with high treadwear ratings — Michelin Primacy 4+ and LTX Trail are among the longest-lasting we fit.
Are expensive tyres worth it?
On heavy SUVs, performance cars and high-mileage commuters, yes — shorter braking and longer life usually offset the price.
Flat tyre? A technician can be on the way in minutes.
